A dental implant is a post (typically made from titanium) that’s inserted into the jawbone. Getting an implant in Atlanta is a great way to replace missing teeth whether it be a single tooth, several, or even all of your teeth. To ensure that your implant is successful and can withstand the day-to-day pressure of biting and chewing we need to ensure that there will be a sufficient amount of bone to sturdily hold it in place. In some cases where the jaw is lacking, we can do a separate procedure known as bone grafting which will give you enough stable bone to make the implant possible.
How We Determine If You Need Bone Grafting
Typically, we can look at an x-ray of the planned installation area and determine the amount, and quality of the jawbone. In other instances, we may not be fully aware of insufficient bone until we actually see it for ourselves. This could either be during a procedure in which we extract your tooth or when we’re actually placing your implant. In both cases, adding in the additional step of doing a bone graft isn’t a big deal and will substantially benefit you in the long run. In fact, your implant may not even be possible without doing a bone graft.
