Getting a dental implant is a detailed process that may even require other treatments to be done ahead of time to get your mouth ready, some of which include:
- Sinus Lift
- When considering an implant on the top arch, we need to take into consideration the location of the sinus linings. There are two sinus cavities above your teeth, one on each side of the nose. Implants should not extend into the sinus cavities, therefore, at times we’ll need to raise the sinus lining to make room for the body of the implants.
- Tooth Extraction
- If you’re wanting to replace an existing tooth with an implant, then we’ll need to remove the tooth first. Depending on the condition of the tooth and how many roots it has, you may or may not be able to do the implant immediately following the planned extraction.
- Bone Grafting
- Having a sufficient amount of stable bone is essential for securely anchoring an implant in place. Bone grafting, a procedure where we can add donor bone to your jaw, is possible if there the area is lacking support. When removing a multi-rooted tooth, we commonly place new bone in the sockets where the roots were on the same day. Then, we wait for the new bone to integrate with your body’s natural bone, making a secure foundation for us to be able to place your implant at a later time.
